New York Mets: Try Not To Embarass Yourselves
Posted by Joe Fiorello on 22 Sep 2009 | NL East, New York Mets

After an 11-3 drubbing, where the Atlanta Braves did all their damage in the first three innings, the Mets have something to play for for the rest of the 2009 season.

Their pride.

Sure they’re not going to win any titles.  Sure they’re the most expensive fourth place team in the history of the game.  That doesn’t mean they should get beat the way they were beat last night.

Thanks to some solid work by the bullpen, who held the hot out of the gate Braves hit less for the final seven innings of the game, the damage was limited.  If they performed as well as the starting pitching, the game might still be going on out in Flushing as I type.

It’s a test of manhood at this point.

Sure there’s got to be some sort of drop off in intensity when you’re playing in games that don’t mean anything.  Anyone can understand that to a point.

But you have to show some sort of fight in the field, or your stands will empty, your TV ratings will drop, and your ticket sales going into next year will plummet.

The Mets need to think of these final few weeks of the season as a spring board into 2010.  The fans don’t expect you to win games.  We understand that these aren’t the Mets that were supposed to be on the field come September.

All we want is for you to look like you’re trying.  Look like you’re hurting with every loss, every strike out, every error.

Give us the respect to lay it all out as we do when we follow you.  Maybe you’ll gain back some of the followers you lost.

Hoping for the best, as a disgruntled, and disheartened Mets fan.
