After a well pitched game from Tim Redding last night, recently maligned closer Francisco Rodriguez put in a stinker of an effort in the 9th inning, throwing 40 pitches and giving up five runs; four coming on a walk off grand slam.
It’s the second walk-off grand slam Rodriguez has given up this season, the first coming off Everth Cabrera. K-Rod is the first pitcher since Lee Smith in 1995 to achieve the dubious distinction.
The blame can’t all be placed on Rodriguez, as short stop Wilson Valdez made an error in the inning. Giving teams extra outs is a recipe for disaster, but you’d still expect your closer to be able to work around it.
Something tells me Mariano Rivera would have been able to get out of the inning unscathed.
I’m pretty relieved this season is almost over. It’s been hard to continue caring, let alone writing about the Mets the way they’ve played this year. I know I’m disgruntled, but being disgruntled requires a certain level of interest that this team makes it impossible to possess.
A small wishlist for Mets fans:
- Getting swept by the Nationals was the bottom. It has to get better
- The Wilpons sell the team
- The front office’s house gets cleaned out
- Jose Reyes will be ready for spring training, despite his latest injury news
- John Lackey won’t be too expensive
- The Rays decide not to commit to the long term deal Carl Crawford deserves
- Your football team remains undefeated through the weekend. (Let’s go JETS)
