Review:
- Finishing with winning percentages between .451 and .534 in the last four years will not cut it in the National League Central anymore. Coming off a 74 win 2009 season, the Houston Astros are certainly getting much older, have a shaky pitching rotation, and the power bats have become weaker. The line-up altogether has too many holes and the rotation has Brett Myers penciled in at number three; not an ideal situation. If the Astros hope to compete with St. Louis, they will need dominance out of their ace Roy Oswalt and great production top to bottom of the line-up.
Line-Up:
- Hitting lead-off, Michael Bourn brings his .354 OBP and 61 stolen bases to set the table. At 26, Bourn is far and away coming off his best season and turning into an All Star (and fantasy stud). Kaz Matsui seems like and easy out, and he must improve his .250 average or he may drop in the order very quickly. Then the bats come out 3-4 with Lance Berkman (.274 / 25 / 80, .399 OBP) and Carlos Lee (.300 / 26 / 102). These are not the numbers they used to be, but they will both be 34 this year and really represent the entire team aging. The 34 year old Pedro Feliz will man the hot corner and is certainly known for his defense, not his .266 average. Hunter Pence will continue to build on his .282 / 25 / 72 2009 great campaign.
Pitching:
- Roy Oswalt has something to prove. His 8 wins were the lowest of his career and 4.12 E.R.A. was the highest. However, if he can return to his 2008 form (17-10 / 3.54 / 165 in 208 I.P.), the rotation COULD be dangerous. Wandy Rodriguez is pitching like an ace and hopes to repeat his 14-12 / 3.02 / 193 season. His 8.4 S.O. / 9 is one of the best in the league. The Astros also brought in Brett Myers, who has seen significant time starting as well as the bull-pen. Here, he’ll be number 3. This signing could be costly, as they hope he can return to 2006 form at 12-7 at 198 I.P. but has not had success since. In a bullpen upgrade, the Astros acquired Brandon Lyon and Matt Lindstrom; a potent tail end.
Summary:
- There are too many questions. The bottom of the rotation is unproven and the bottom of the line-up stinks. Carlos Lee and Lance Berkman (free agent to be also) are growing old and their numbers show it. They may go sell crazy and make some serious moves for the future in July, but if St. Louis is struggling, they may be able to compete with Milwaukee. Doubtful. However, if that is the case, look for serious bench upgrades and a decent 4-5 starter. Prediction: 72 Wins, 5th American League Central.
