Home Cookin’: Mets win, 4-3

The Mets overcame an early 3-0 deficit, which was the result of some bad defense on the Mets’ part. In the second inning, Angel Pagan played a deep fly ball at the wall in center into a triple, a ball he probably should have caught. Hanley Ramirez then singled in that runner (Cody Ross).

In the next inning, the bottom of the Marlins’ order loaded the bases, and then on grounder to third hit by Hanley Ramirez with nobody out, David Wright inexplicably threw to second instead of home. He made a clean throw, but Ike Davis missed the catch on a throw by Ruben Tejada that seemed okay. The runners from second and third both scored on that play.

The Mets responded quickly, though. After a Ruben Tejada double, R.A. Dickey singled the young second baseman in. Dickey eventually scored later in the inning on a long double by Jason Bay that followed an Angel Pagan double play. New York got the tying and go-ahead runs in the sixth when Jeff Francoeur lined a single to left after a Rod Barajas double, scoring David Wright. Ruben Tejada then grounded into a fielder’s choice to score Barajas.

The Mets had trouble in the seventh, when Pedro Feliciano made a bad throw to second on a double play comebacker. The Mets got the out at second, but Jose Reyes was taken out on a questionably dirty slide. Elmer Dessens was brought in with two outs, and he struck out Hanley Ramirez. He then worked the eighth with relative ease despite hitting Jorge Cantu with a 2-2 count to lead off the inning.

Mets fans everywhere then gulped as K-Rod came in with a one-run lead in the ninth. Frankie got the first two batters easily, but then allowed a swinging bunt to Chris Coghlan, walked Gaby Sanchez, and threw a wild pitch with Hanley Ramirez batting, putting the go-ahead run at second. But Frankie got Hanley to ground out right down the third base line, where David Wright made a nice one-hop jump throw to end the game.

So…the Mets continue to hover around .500 with a 28-27 record. They play the Marlins tomorrow at 4:10 PM on Fox, when Jon Niese squares off against Nate Robertson, who starts against the Mets for the third time this year.
