Cliff Lee And Andy Pettitte’s Retirement

Cliff Lee And Andy Pettitte’s Retirement
AL East, New York Yankees | 4 Feb 2011

So, I watched Andy Pettitte announce his retirement today.  A class act. Some thoughts:
One of the big questions was whether or not he will stay retired. Will he come back and pitch at some point? He did utter the three magic words, “Never say never.”   I’ll bet those words end up on the back page of at least one newspaper tomorrow. But anyway, something else he said makes me think …

Will Soriano Be a Problem For The Yankees?

Will Soriano Be a Problem For The Yankees?
AL East, New York Yankees | 17 Jan 2011

Bill Madden of the New York Daily News is reporting that Rafael Soriano has a bad attitude and “was hated by almost everyone in Tampa Bay last year.”  Madden says Soriano didn’t like being brought into games in non-save situations or having to pitch more than one inning in a game.
Will this be a problem for the Yankees or will Soriano tow the line for the Yankees like so many …

The poll is on the top of the left sidebar of the blog. Voting ends on 1/17/11. Don’t be shy. Let me know what you think!

Andy Pettitte And His Future

Andy Pettitte And His Future
AL East, New York Yankees | 29 Dec 2010

If we are to believe what we read, Andy Pettitte still has not made up his mind as to whether he’ll pitch in 2011, although he is leaning toward retirement. From what I’ve been reading on blogs and on Twitter, most Yankee fans want him to return. I’m not so sure that is a good idea.
Pettitte is 38 years old and, even though he had a good year in 2010, …

Russell Martin Injured

Russell Martin Injured
AL East, New York Yankees | 16 Dec 2010

According to the LoHud Yankees Blog, Russell Martin will be having knee surgery due to a slightly torn meniscus discovered during his physical this week. They expect him to be ready for Spring Training.
Martin is expected to be the Yankees everyday catcher in 2011. What does this mean for Jesus Montero, the Yankees top catching prospect?
He could be traded for pitching. Brian Cashman said the team is in “a better position to do …

Whether Yanks Sign Him Or Not, Cliff Lee Is A No-Win Situation

Whether Yanks Sign Him Or Not, Cliff Lee Is A No-Win Situation
AL East, New York Yankees | 13 Dec 2010

In my previous post I said that if Cliff Lee wants 6 years the Yankees don’t need him. Well, as everyone knows, they have offered him a 7-year deal.  Crazy.
I don’t believe a pitcher over the age of 30 should be given more than a 5 year deal. Even 5 years is a lot. He’d probably be good for only three of those years. With Lee’s history of back …

Thoughts On The Jeter Deal

Thoughts On The Jeter Deal
AL East, New York Yankees | 6 Dec 2010

So the Jeter deal is complete. Was there any doubt that it wouldn’t be? Anyone who thought he would go elsewhere needs to have his or her head examined. Derek Jeter is the face of the New York Yankees. He’ll be a Yankee, in one form or another, until the day he dies.
The negotiations were tough. Will they have an effect on his relationship with the team going forward? Probably not. I …

Cashman To Be Elf For A Day

Cashman To Be Elf For A Day
AL East, New York Yankees | 30 Nov 2010

Yankees GM Brian Cashman will be rappeling down 22 stories of a building in Connecticut.
Yes, you read it right. According to a post on the LoHud Yankees Blog, Cashman will dress as an elf and rappel down the the building with Santa Claus this Sunday.
This sounds like a joke. He doesn’t strike me as someone who would be interested in something like this.
Oh, well. Safe travels, Cash.

No First Place Votes For Cano? What A Travesty!

No First Place Votes For Cano? What A Travesty!
AL East, New York Yankees | 24 Nov 2010

I knew Robinson Cano would not win the AL MVP Award. I knew that Josh Hamilton had the better year. So, I wasn’t surprised when the announcement came down yesterday that Hamilton was the winner.
What did surprise me was the fact that Cano got no first place votes and that he came in third. That is so bush league. Robinson Cano had a better year than that.
Maybe writers shouldn’t …

On Posada As DH And Jeter’s GG

On Posada As DH And Jeter’s GG
AL East, New York Yankees | 10 Nov 2010

Well, that was easy. According to the Daily News, Jorge Posada was told by Yankees GM Brian Cashman that he’ll be the DH in 2011.
I was expecting a fight or something.  But, no, it all seems to be settled, as long as Jesus Montero can make the Opening Day roster, I guess.
Montero, whose catching skills have lagged behind his hitting, is now thought of as slightly better behind the plate …

Posada Should Take A Lesson From Girardi

Posada Should Take A Lesson From Girardi
AL East, New York Yankees | 8 Nov 2010

Jorge Posada plans to be the starting catcher in 2011. There is just one problem with that: He can’t do it anymore.
It’s time to hand the reins over to someone else. Whether that someone else is Jesus Montero remains to be seen. But he should hand the reins over nonetheless, just like Joe Girardi did years ago when Posada was just starting his career.
Easier said than done, I …

Enjoy The World Series– I’m Taking A Break
AL East, New York Yankees | 23 Oct 2010

So, the 2010 Yankee season is over. The Yankees were out-played in the ALCS, plain and simple. The Texas Rangers deserve to go to the World Series. Congratulations to them.
I will be taking a break from blogging for a few weeks. Unless something really big happens in Yankees Universe, look for my next post around the time the first postseason award is announced. I believe that will be Manager Of The …

See Y’all In Texas!

See Y’all In Texas!
AL East, New York Yankees | 20 Oct 2010

The Yankees are still alive! They have forced a Game 6 Friday night in Arlington, Texas!
Today’s game was a heckuva good one. CC didn’t have his best stuff but he showed why he is the Yankees ace, striking out 7 and walking none. The bats finally came alive, too. Three home runs! I love it when the Bronx Bombers show up.
Now its back to Texas. GO YANKEES!

ALCS: Pressure’s On In Game 3

ALCS: Pressure’s On In Game 3
AL East, New York Yankees | 18 Oct 2010

I live in an area affected by the Cablevision/FOX fiasco, which means I haven’t seen one pitch of the NLCS. If this keeps up I’ll miss part or all of the World Series. If the Yankees advance and this thing is not resolved I don’t know what I will do.
If the Yankees advance. Right now, it is not looking good. They needed to win both games in Texas. Instead, they settled …

ALCS Preview: Yankees vs Rangers

ALCS Preview: Yankees vs Rangers
AL East, New York Yankees | 15 Oct 2010

So, I got my wish. I wanted the Rays done away with and they were. Thank you Texas Rangers.
Will this come back to haunt me? We’ll see. The Rangers are definitely capable of winning this series, especially if it goes to a Game 7, which Cliff Lee would pitch. That is the only bad thing about him having to wait until Game 3 to pitch. Lee aside, I think the Yankees …

Between Series: Some Thoughts

Between Series: Some Thoughts
AL East, New York Yankees | 11 Oct 2010

I predicted the Yankees-Twins ALDS to go five games with the Yankees advancing to the ALCS by the skin of their teeth.  I had the Twins giving them a lot of trouble because they are so much better this year. Only problem was that the much improved Twins team didn’t show up. It was a re-write of last year, the Yankees sweeping the Twins aside once again.
Can the Yankees …

ALDS Preview: Yankees vs Twins
AL East, New York Yankees | 4 Oct 2010

Well, this time I was right. The Yankees didn’t win the AL East. They are the AL Wild Card and will face the Minnesota Twins.
I didn’t want the Yankees to win the East.  Cliff Lee twice in a short series? Scary. I wanted the Yankees to face the Twins and yesterday I got my wish. So, why am I so scared?
The 2010 Minnesota Twins hardly resemble the 2009 model which the …

Boy, Am I Glad I Was Wrong
AL East, New York Yankees | 29 Sep 2010

Last week I was out on the ledge, having declared the Yankee season over.
Boy, am I glad I was wrong!
The Yankees clinched at least the AL Wild Card last night. They still have some time to win the AL East, although I don’t think that’s going to happen. But, hey, I’ve been wrong before!
Congratulations to the New York Yankees!

Out On The Ledge

Out On The Ledge
AL East, New York Yankees | 24 Sep 2010

Things were looking pretty good for the Yankees after the first two games of the just-completed Rays series. They had won those two games and, with CC Sabathia pitching in game 4, it looked as if they could at least take 3 out of 4 from the Rays. But the Yankee bullpen had other ideas. Bad ideas.
I don’t have a good feeling about the Yankees right now. If they …
