A Season on the Brink

A Season on the Brink
NL East, New York Mets | 4 Aug 2010

That’s all it is for the Mets right now.
They gained what was easily their most important victory of the year tonight, August 3rd, beating the Braves 3-2 courtesy of a 9th-inning solo shot by Jeff Francoeur. They also got a 1-2-3 save from Frankie Rodriguez. The tie game had been set up by a 4-pitch walk to Frenchy in the 7th, a sacrifice bunt, and an RBI single by Chris …

Can the Mets Flip the Switch?

Can the Mets Flip the Switch?
NL East, New York Mets | 28 Jul 2010

Night and day, huh?
After annihilating the Cardinals and Adam Wainwright last night, the Mets have an opportunity to kick up a nice streak. The pitching matchup will be the very same of the 20-inning game on April 17-Johan Santana vs. Jaime Garcia.
La Russa has opted to throw a rather weak lineup out against Santana. A win tonight, and a chance to go for a sweep at noon tomorrow, would be …

What Is Wrong With the Mets’ Organization

What Is Wrong With the Mets’ Organization
NL East, New York Mets | 26 Jul 2010

I’m going to write this before anything happens today or tomorrow with coaching changes.
The point is, I’m getting the feeling that the Mets aren’t going to make any significant changes by the July 31 trade deadline, whether coaching-related or player personnel related.
The Mets can’t hit, are pitching well with a mediocre pitching coach, and have played wildly inconsistent baseball with a bad players’ manager. However, since they are so inconsistent, …

Why Jose Reyes’ Injury-Riddled Seasons May Turn Out for the Best

Why Jose Reyes’ Injury-Riddled Seasons May Turn Out for the Best
NL East, New York Mets | 25 Jul 2010

I’m not going to say that it’s a good thing that the Mets have lost so much time from Jose Reyes since the end of 2008 for various injuries-first the calf/hamstring that lasted all of 2009, then the thyroid that seriously impeded his in-game play in early 2010, to the oblique that yet again seems to have thrown Reyes’ timing off of late (since returning from that injury).
In 2009, the …

A Lineup Shakeup and Today’s Latest

A Lineup Shakeup and Today’s Latest
NL East, New York Mets | 23 Jul 2010

Tonight’s lineup is an interesting little number spun by Jerry Manuel, who may be a game or two away from losing his job (more on that later):
1. Jose Reyes SS
2. Luis Castillo 2B
3. Angel Pagan CF
4. David Wright 3B
5. Carlos Beltran CF
6. Ike Davis 1B
7. Jason Bay LF
8. Henry Blanco C
9. Johan Santana LHP
Like it except for Castillo in the 2-hole. But seeing as Pagan is the Mets’ best hitter …

Trouble brewing in Mets land, but plenty of reasons to believe

Trouble brewing in Mets land, but plenty of reasons to believe
NL East, New York Mets | 22 Jul 2010

Yeah, things are ugly right now.
The Mets were swept by one of the worst teams in the league-a team that could hit, but cannot pitch at all. This is on the heels of a series loss to the Giants and general poor play by the Mets (series losses to the Marlins, Reds, and Braves, and a four-game split with the Nats) since Interleague Play ended.
What’s puzzling is how cold the …

Mets returning to full strength

Mets returning to full strength
NL East, New York Mets | 20 Jul 2010

For the first time since April of 2009, the Mets will have their “top 8″ (each player first on their depth chart) in the lineup together against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field. Game time is 9:40, and Mike Pelfrey will pitch against Ian Kennedy and a powerful D-Backs lineup. It will be interesting to the outcome if Aaron Heilman gets any save chances in this series.
Luis Castillo was called …

The Mets need to remain calm

The Mets need to remain calm
NL East, New York Mets | 18 Jul 2010

It has been a rough go of it of late. And that happens in baseball.
No one could anticipate that after getting Carlos Beltran back, the Mets wouldn’t score a run for 24 innings. But every team has peaks and troughs in its baseball season. You’re never as bad as you are at your worst or as good as you are at your best. For a 2-month period, the Mets were …

Back in Business, Crazy Met lineup

Back in Business, Crazy Met lineup
NL East, New York Mets | 17 Jul 2010

Hey folks, I’m back from the British Virgin Islands and ready to get DMF back up to speed.
I was just going to plug tonight’s pitchers and Frenchy being in, but that was before I saw tonight’s lineup.
1. Ruben Tejada SS
2. Jason Bay LF
3. David Wright 3B
4. Carlos Beltran CF
5. Jeff Francoeur RF
6. Ike Davis 1B
7. Rod Barajas C
8. Alex Cora 2B
And another thing I missed, Nick Evans was sent down …

Reyes not ready yet, but…El Esta Aqui!
NL East, New York Mets | 15 Jul 2010

The Mets will have to wait a day for their true lineup to take form for the first time in 2010. Tonight, Carlos Beltran returns in the cleanup spot, with Angel Pagan shifting over to right, and Jeff Francoeur FINALLY taking his seat on the bench.
The lineup is this:
1. Pagan RF
2. Cora 2B
3. Wright 3B
4. Beltran CF
5. Davis 1B
6. Bay LF
7. Thole C
8. Tejada SS
9. Dickey P
I like Dickey starting …

The Mets are at a crossroads

The Mets are at a crossroads
NL East, New York Mets | 12 Jul 2010

With the loss today, the Mets have had some problematic trends popping up since the Puerto Rico series. Heading into Sunday’s game with Johan Santana on the mound, the Mets are 47-40, having gone 4-8 since peaking at 43-32 after taking a series from the Twins. They are exhibiting (lately) a lot of their mid-2009 tendencies that did them in even before the injury bug bit them. Incidentally, it has …

Mets miss out on Lee; What are their trade market possibilities; Tonight’s Game
NL East, New York Mets | 9 Jul 2010

It happened in the blink of an eye, but today Cliff Lee went from Seattle’s starter for tonight, to “imminently” wearing Yankee pinstripes, before finally landing with the Texas Rangers. Him and Mark Lowe were sent to the Rangers in exchange for Justin Smoak and minor leaguers Blake Beaven, Matt Lawson, and Cory Lueke. Only Smoak was considered a top prospect.
Joel Sherman of the NY Post reported that a deal …

Now THAT was gangsta.

Now THAT was gangsta.
NL East, New York Mets | 6 Jul 2010

Yeah, I counted Johan Santana out.
He hadn’t had his usual stuff all year in his first 16 starts, and I didn’t care what his numbers said. We could all see it, and all the metrics told us he had gotten incredibly lucky. He also was said to have been tipping his pitches at two different points in the year.
But then he showed up in Washington and twirled a 7-inning, 7-strikeout …

The Atrocities that Are the 2010 MLB All-Star Game Rosters

The Atrocities that Are the 2010 MLB All-Star Game Rosters
NL East, New York Mets | 5 Jul 2010

I haven’t been this furious about something baseball related in a long time-probably more so than the Galaragga missed call.
The 2010 All-Star Rosters (outside the starting lineups) are nothing short of disgraceful.
You can view them here: http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/events/all_star/y2010/roster_league.jsp
To start, overall both starting lineups are fair. Instead of Chase Utley, Martin Prado (who SHOULD be starting in the first place) will play. But there’s nothing I can really complain about. Derek Jeter …

Reyes out; Pagan in; Saturday

Reyes out; Pagan in; Saturday
NL East, New York Mets | 3 Jul 2010

Angel Pagan has been cleared to start and is leading off in tonight’s lineup. He was out a week.
Jose Reyes, on the other hand, has a similar oblique injury, and Jerry Manuel expects him to start no earlier than Sunday, which Newsday writer David Lenno was “skeptical” about. Considering the time Pagan (has) missed (so far), I would expect Reyes to be out for a few more days.
Knowing the Mets, …

The Mets are well on their way to playing bad baseball

The Mets are well on their way to playing bad baseball
NL East, New York Mets | 2 Jul 2010

So, about a minute ago, Ryan Zimmerman hit a sacrifice fly to score Willie Harris (who else?) to win the game for the Nationals by a 2-1 margin.
Johan Santana was brilliant, but obviously the Mets got their first inning run on an Ike Davis single and went to sleep. And Jerry Manuel managed possibly the worst game in Major League history.
Santana threw 97 pitches in 7 innings, allowed 6 hits, …

No Way, Jose, but still a win

No Way, Jose, but still a win
NL East, New York Mets | 1 Jul 2010

Despite being out Jose Reyes and Angel Pagan, the Mets won last night, taking advantage of four Marlins errors and winning despite a shaky outing by Mike Pelfrey. The win was necessary, and highlighted by a four-out save by Frankie.
Pelfrey was likely thrown off by the 1.5 hour rain delay, which necessitated him warming up twice.
So tonight, the Mets again are out Reyes and Pagan (both day-to-day), and Jerry decides …

Reyes out of the lineup; Mike Pelfrey needs to keep this train on the rails
NL East, New York Mets | 30 Jun 2010

Bad news-Jose Reyes left batting practice accompanied by a trainer. He has been scratched from the lineup with a stiff lower back.
Mike Pelfrey is 6-0 after Mets losses this season, with an ERA just above two. The Mets will look to him as a stopper tonight, because they have lost four straight road games, and, let’s face it, they cannot get swept by the Marlins on the road AGAIN.
Last night’s …

Start of the Puerto Rico Series, Other Stuff

Start of the Puerto Rico Series, Other Stuff
NL East, New York Mets | 29 Jun 2010

The Mets took a loss to start their series in Puerto Rico at the Marlins, 10-3 tonight.
Mets pitching did not fare well, as R.A. Dickey came back to Earth, allowing 5 runs in 5 innings, his knuckler not doing the job in the muggy Puerto Rico climate. Fernando Nieve and Ryota Igarashi also allowed 2 and 5 runs a piece.
Jason Bay accounted for the Mets’ scoring with a solo homer …
