Well, I guess this is as good a spot as any for updates, so here’s a few:
1. My next replay blog project will begin in mid-March and run for about five months with one post a week. I have a Strat Anniversary party to attend in New York on February 12, a draft day in my ECBA league to prepare for after that, followed by a visit to the parental …

LOCAL LADY LEAVES LIT LEGACY
By Maggie Finch
Squallpocket Honker Lifestyles Editor
Sheila S. Grossinger was never one to go quietly. The 86-year-old former psychologist and Maine native, bedridden with acute dementia for nearly twenty years at the Squallpocket Acres Nursing Home, passed away Wednesday but left behind a most rare gift for her family.
“It’s a literary find, is what it is,” says Carlton “Buzz” Grossinger, one of her two surviving sons.
While …

PITTSBURGH—Seamus reporting, because Lester is off drinking pints of Dunkelweizen at Max’s Allegheny Tavern with both of the other Royals fans who showed up at Three Rivers, while I’m here by Doc Sheila’s bed watching the poor girl vanish into the sheets.
It was a pretty anti-climactic seventh game, as far as seventh games go, but because it WAS a seventh game in the first place, I think I’ll just shut …

DR. GROSSINGER’S PRE-GAME
They had the sixth game on in the hotel today, and I sat in the William Penn lobby with the other guests to watch. Needless to say, I was transported. Mr. Headley wants me back at Three Rivers with him tomorrow, and says there will be no discussing the matter. I’m weakening slowly, but suppose I can handle another few hours of fresh air. …

DR. GROSSINGER’S PRE-GAME
After yesterday’s devastating loss, I have taken to my hotel bed again. Mr. Headley has no choice but to wait on me, for all I can do is lie here and dream of past Pirate heroics. My long departed mother has filled my head with all of the ones I was too young to remember. See, when my father died in World War II, and …

DR. GROSSINGER’S PRE-GAME
I had a morning free of headaches, so Mr. Headley got me out of bed and dressed and out into the sweet October air. It was good to be going back to a baseball park, and it made me think Pittsburgh winning that thrilling Game 3 boosted my health along with my spirits…
KANSAS CITY–John Candelaria simply has to pitch better today; he could not have performed worse than …

DR. GROSSINGER’S PRE-GAME
The Hotel Raphael is nice, though it looks very much like my room at the William Penn. Mr. Headley has been coming to my bedside quite often now with a thermometer and World Series updates, and I have an odd feeling that my Pirates are going to rebound. Like they did that one magical year for my mother. Hopefully I’ll be well enough to join Lester at …

DR. GROSSINGER’S PRE-GAME
I have a headache and chills that won’t go away. The headache is called McRae, the chills are called Otis, and I did not like my ace pitcher being batted about in his own home. I did not like it not one little bit. Mr. Rooker needs to earn us a split before we go back on the road, and Seamus needs to warm my soup from the …

DR. GROSSINGER’S PRE-GAME
Has the concluding destination at the end of this long, long pennant road really arrived? It’s a stunning October day in western Pennsylvania, a region I know rather well, and I feel more than confident that Mr. Candy Man Candelaria will stifle the Royal bats. Mr. Leonard will start for the visitors, a wonderful pitcher in his own right, but I know he is hittable; after all, the …

Once upon a time, in a baseball galaxy far, far away…
PITTSBURGH—Seamus here. The three of us are settled into adjoining rooms at the William Penn Hotel, the Steel City primed for Game One later today. The way these two teams battled all year (check out the final pennant race graphs for the AL and NL that I forgot to show you yesterday), I’d be amazed if this thing …

The Numbers and Envelopes, Please
General Baseball | 18 Jan 2011

As threatened, hitting in 1977 was generally through the roof, and the fact that each league only had eight teams with the eight best offenses raised those shingles even more.
But many of the big numbers were deceptive.  George Foster clubbed 57 homers and knocked in 166 runs, but had an ice cold stretch for virtually the entire month of August that may have cost the Reds the pennant.  Steve Garvey, …

KANSAS CITY—Geez Louise. What a game, and what a finish.
Seemed pretty ordinary at first. Splittorff giving up two-out singles to Harrah and Horton in the 1st but escaping without blood. And Dock Ellis mowing us down in the 1st, yet another Royals scoreless inning.
But then some dormant KC magic bubbles to the surface. Wathan, filling in for the injured Porter, rips a single to begin our …

Might as well, right?  Got this three-day weekend, not much to do but watch football and sit in my 77-degree backyard (the last time I will rub this in, promise), so it’s a great time to bring Funkyball’s regular season to its nerve-wracking end. Besides don’t want to keep Chuck Tanner from sitting around much longer. Look for another Live Tweetcast of the Rangers/Royals tonight at 10 p.m. eastern, 9 …

KANSAS CITY—I would prefer to not even imagine the unthinkable. But here I am in the quickly emptying Royals Stadium, having just watched Bert Blyleven mow down my Royals like he’s some kind of Hall of Fame pitcher. And for the second time in two weekends. Hmm.
Leonard matched him pretty well, giving up a Harrah walk and Hargrove and Washington singles to start the 4th and pretty much put …

Sheeeeyit. Never thought I’d say it, but I miss every one of those nice folks that rooted for the wrong teams and got evaporated. Not as much fun being on a supersonic luxury high-speed train under the earth if you’re only sharing it with a stuck-up lady doctor, a Nebraska farm boy in a wheelchair with one limb left, and a creepy guy …

Seamus reporting in, because it is my job once in a while. But I got a fun one for you today. Being we’re down to the wire in the American League, even though no team except one really seems to be wanting this pennant, I thought I’d give us all a treat and rig up a special day of scoreboard watching. Most players and managers say they …

Ever since Ed Ott silenced the Dodger Stadium throng with a game-tying, 9th inning blast off Don Sutton, everything has been sailing the Pirates’ way. Need the Dodgers to stay shell-shocked in St. Louis? No problem. Need for the Phillies and Reds to self-destruct? You got it. All this with Stargell being on the DL, too.

Okay, let’s regroup the group. Sheila and her Pirates are flying high after the huge comeback win in L.A., and Sherman has officially checked out. Amy and Mikey have been drinking a lot of beer, with their Reds and Phillies petering out. In the American League camp, Friendly Fred is so high he barely knows his Yankees are in trouble. Did I ever tell you how my wife used to make the telephone ring? First she’d go in the bathroom with a relaxing cup of tea. Then she’d pour herself a warm bath, maybe even drop in bubble stuff or some of that lady oil. She’d be wearing that pretty kimono I got her in Japan on our honeymoon, and she’d take that off, climb in and lean …
