Rookies, Rookies, and More Rookies

Rookies, Rookies, and More Rookies
AL East, Toronto Blue Jays | 3 Feb 2011

Opening Day is now less than two months away, and the Blue Jays are still surrounded by questions.
One of the biggest concerns is third base.  Will Jose Bautista shift there, despite his personal preference to play RF?  Will Aaron Hill or Yunel Escobar (or both) shift from their current spots?  Will Edwin Encarnacion reprise his role of E5?  Or maybe, just maybe, will the team break camp with an unproven, …

Rolling With GC

Rolling With GC
AL East, Toronto Blue Jays | 2 Feb 2011

One of the things that is kinda cool about bothering to write about the Blue Jays is hanging out with the other people that bother to write about the Blue Jays. Well, most of the time. Since we clearly share a common interest, it seems to make random invites a little more easy to follow through on.
So anyways, GC has a blog Snider’s Web, a twitter account gcm1979 and some …

Spicing Up A Slow, Boring Tuesday

Spicing Up A Slow, Boring Tuesday
AL East, Toronto Blue Jays | 1 Feb 2011

So it’s Tuesday.  It’s supposed to snow heavily later on.  The day is dragging.  And to top it off, there isn’t much happening in the world of baseball right now (unless you are currently watching Manny Ramirez and Johnny Damon pull on Tampa Bay Rays jerseys).
Alex Anthopoulos hasn’t made any crazy trades for a few days.  We still don’t know who will play third, or close, or be the fifth starter.  …

I believe in bravado

I believe in bravado
AL East, Toronto Blue Jays | 31 Jan 2011

The Blue Jays’ state of the franchise meeting was held last week. I was not in attendance and this post is not timely, but here it is anyway — and I’ll keep it short. Two things short, even. Thing the first According to Gregor Chisholm of bluejays.com (and everybody else who was in attendance and [...]

Weekly Round Up: Double Shot

Weekly Round Up: Double Shot
AL East, Toronto Blue Jays | 31 Jan 2011

You see what I just did right there?

Missed last week’s round up due to the 3 day bender I went on after the Vernon trade was officially completed. Much has happened in Blue Jay land. Check it.
Consider this your required reading.
Consider this your required listening.
Consider this your required viewing. This one was a close second place.

The Times They Are A Changin’

The Times They Are A Changin’
AL East, Toronto Blue Jays | 28 Jan 2011

There have been a lot of nice posts written in the wake of Vernon Wells’ departure from the Jays.  Many have been kind to the former CF, many have been damning.  I have enjoyed them all.
But there was one thing written in particular that got my mind spinning.  Navin from Sports and the City posed a question after Wells was dealt – do you remember who played CF for the …

Alex Anthopoulos – From Hero to Villain???

Alex Anthopoulos – From Hero to Villain???
AL East, Toronto Blue Jays | 26 Jan 2011

Wow, that was fast.
On Friday AA did the unbelievable, the previously unthinkable and impossible.  He traded Vernon Wells.  He got rid of THE CONTRACT from Toronto’s payroll.
He was a genius, the next big thing, headed for super-stardom.  He was a hero, the man who was going to turn around the franchise.  In AA we trust.
Now, four days and another trade later, AA is a villain.
Gone is Mike Napoli a Blue …

The Dust Has Settled, The Smoke Has Cleared – Vernon is Gone

The Dust Has Settled, The Smoke Has Cleared – Vernon is Gone
AL East, Toronto Blue Jays | 24 Jan 2011

Let me tell you a story.
It’s the summer of 2002.  I have just graduated university and suddenly my life has completely, fundamentally, and significantly changed.  I am now supposed to become a man, a contributing member of society, with a job, and a steady income.  Gone are the days when I can get drunk all night and sleep ’til noon.
But I wasn’t quite ready to move on.  I was living …

Party time!

Party time!
AL East, Toronto Blue Jays | 22 Jan 2011

Slogging through work on Friday evening, my phone went off. “V-dub is gonzo,” read the text message. And a great happiness filled me. Along with the happiness was a sort of disbelief. Vernon Wells is gone? His contract is rivalled only by Barry Zito’s (and maybe Jayson Werth’s) for worst in baseball. I’m pretty sure [...]

You’ll be Mad at Me

You’ll be Mad at Me
AL East, Toronto Blue Jays | 22 Jan 2011

So I finally started a podcast for Beyond the Box Score. I’ll tell you what though, I was incredibly nervous in episode one. I accidentally said “and joining us from Ontario, Toronto.” So please don’t hold it against me! I love my Jays and my Jays fans! However, I do encourage you to listen.

The Chronicles of Vernon Wells

The Chronicles of Vernon Wells
AL East, Toronto Blue Jays | 22 Jan 2011

1:06 AM: I just got home from work. Yeah it’s Friday night, I know. But you see I work at an airport and it never closes. Like ever. I have been working there for over 10 years on shift, so I am wide awake and looking for some info. And I wanna get drunk.
1:10 AM: Where to fucking start. V-Dub has been a Blue Jay his entire life. Drafted 5th …

If Only…Reed Johnson Stayed a Jay

If Only…Reed Johnson Stayed a Jay
AL East, Toronto Blue Jays | 21 Jan 2011

Back in December I wrote an “If Only” column (if only the Jays could sign Major League’s Roger Dorn to play 3B), meaning to make it a weekly series.
Well, it took six weeks but today I present a second column:
If only Reed Johnson remained a member of the Toronto Blue Jays.
Johnson re-joined the Cubs last week and seeing his name again brought back a lot of memories.
Don’t get me wrong …

Look Up, Look Waaaaaaaaay Up

Look Up, Look Waaaaaaaaay Up
AL East, Toronto Blue Jays | 20 Jan 2011

Remember the Friendly Giant?
It was a Canadian television classic, aired daily on CBC for 27 years until 1985.
There wasn’t much of a premise or plot to the show.  Each episode started with a voice saying “Look up, look waaaaaay up.”  The camera then found a huge giant (played by Bob Homme).  He lived in a castle and talked to his friends Rusty the Rooster and Jerome the Giraffe.  He played recorder.  …

Dear Manny and Alex…

Dear Manny and Alex…
AL East, Toronto Blue Jays | 17 Jan 2011

Manny Ramirez is still a free agent.  The latest rumours that had him signing a deal with the Angels were, as Getting Blanked’s Dustin Parkes reported, absolutely and embarrasingly false.
Therefore, the weeks and months full of rumours tying him to the Jays, and the numerous Manny sightings in Toronto this offseason, could still prove to have merit in terms of a contract.
Do I have anything to base that on?  No.
But I can say …

Travis d’Arnaud Talks to 1BJW

Travis d’Arnaud Talks to 1BJW
AL East, Toronto Blue Jays | 17 Jan 2011

Blue Jays catching prospect Travis d’Arnaud was in Toronto recently to take part in team activities. It was d’Arnaud’s first taste of Major League life north of the border. d’Arnaud, who will turn 22 years old next month, was acquired last off-season in the trade that sent Roy Halladay to Philadelphia. Injured for much of the 2010 season, d’Arnaud has been working hard to get healthy during the Autumn and …

Weekly Round Up: It’s been a while…..
AL East, Toronto Blue Jays | 16 Jan 2011

Yeah so whatever. My e-mail account and Twitter feed are cluttered. It’s downright silly at this point. Plus, it’s not like I plan to stop looking for new sexy cowgirls on line anytime soon.
What I have done is turned in my BBA membership card, turned off sitemeter and remembered why I started up this bitch in the first place. It’s not about pages views. It’s not about making money. And …

Preseason Power Rankings

Preseason Power Rankings
AL East, Toronto Blue Jays | 13 Jan 2011

What says "Power" like Serpentor?

MLBBlogBuzz  is compiling a preseason power rankings by asking all members to submit their lists.  I enjoy reading weekly power rankings on sites such as CBS Sportsline, and SI.com but have never actually sat down to write my own.
So I figured I’d participate.  I wasn’t expecting it would be as hard as it was, but let me tell you – trying to rank 30 teams in …
