Offseason Prospectus #17: Colorado Rockies

Offseason Prospectus #17: Colorado Rockies
Colorado Rockies | 4 Jan 2010

In the fall of 2007, the Rockies used an eleven-game winning streak and an extraordinary extra-innings win against San Diego in game 163 to surge into the postseason and eventually to the World Series. They had five players with 90 or more RBI – Matt Holliday (137), Brad Hawpe (116), Garrett Atkins (111), Troy Tulowitzki (99), and Todd Helton (91) – and looked like a team built to win for …

As part of the Baseball Bloggers Alliance, my job is to spout my opinion on end-of-season awards and make sure we kick the crap out of the BBWAA (they deserve it). I figure with the Marlins season over, the playoffs in heat, and most importantly, my deadlines approaching, I’d get us started with these awards.

NL Manager of the Year Ballot
2009 Season Awards, Colorado Rockies, Florida Marlins, Los Angeles Dodgers, NL West | 8 Oct 2009

Managing is difficult to quantify, unless you follow a team around for an entire season religiously, like I do with the Pirates (and trust me, John Russell is not getting any manager of the year votes). The conventional wisdom is that you look at the teams that did well, take the one that has the least natural talent, and say the manager made up for it and was …

Rocky Road for the Dodgers

Rocky Road for the Dodgers
Colorado Rockies, Los Angeles Dodgers | 3 Oct 2009

The current end-of-season set between the Rockies and Dodgers is so packed with drama, the postseason itself may seem like a let-down.
Among the dramatic highlights of tonight’s game, which I listened to via MLB.com, we had Manny Ramirez, the 2004 World Series MVP, idiot savant of the batters box, supposedly immune to pressure and possessed of a “natural” swing and hitting ability that is matched only by guys enshrined …

For Cardinals, Clinching Doesn’t Solve Everything

For Cardinals, Clinching Doesn’t Solve Everything
Colorado Rockies, St. Louis Cardinals | 29 Sep 2009

The Cardinals were able to lock up the NL Central this weekend.  They weren’t able to lock down worries about the postseason, however.
The clincher was nice and you have to give all credit to Adam Wainwright.  130 pitches and he’s still able to strike out batters to keep the St. Louis lead in the eighth.  Chris Carpenter says that locked down the Cy Young for him.  While I’m still fairly …

Cardinals’ Party On Hold

Cardinals’ Party On Hold
Colorado Rockies, St. Louis Cardinals | 26 Sep 2009

All the Cardinals needed was a win.  A win to head to October.  A win, and Chris Carpenter was on the mound.  It was all set up for a perfectly appropriate ending.

However, someone forgot to either tell the offense or the Rockies, depending on who was more at fault.

This article and other Cardinal stories may be found at C70 At The Bat. You can also follow Cardinal70 on …
