Happy Super Bowl Day everyone!!! I’m sure many of you would rather be getting ready to watch the Chargers in the big game but a Pittsburgh v. Green Bay matchup has the potential to be an entertaining game. To honor the memory of my dad, I will be cheering hard for the Packers.

Anyway, we’ve reached the end of the road for my posts on my Friars All Time team. Today …

Over at the Fro: the PCL Padres and taking stock of history
NL West, San Diego Padres | 3 Feb 2011

Avenging Jack Murphy and RJ’s Fro are teaming up (Avenging Jack Jones’ Fro?) this season for an in depth look at the history of the Pacific Coast League’s San Diego Padres. Perhaps, “in depth”, is a bit of a reach on our part…  but hey, we’ll give it a try.
So check out our brand new introduction to the series which is actually the third installment of the PCL series. You …

Where are the 2010 Padres Now?

Where are the 2010 Padres Now?
NL West, San Diego Padres | 2 Feb 2011

The 2010 Padres did an amazing job winning 90 games.  They were able to catch the interest of the city and for the first time since the 2006 season they made baseball relevant in San Diego.  As the casual fans transition from football back to baseball they will notice that some familiar faces from 2010 are no longer with the Padres.

Traded:

- Adrian Gonzalez – Boston Red …

Baseball Game Attire: 1930s style

Baseball Game Attire: 1930s style
NL West, San Diego Padres | 1 Feb 2011

Over at Ducksnorts, Geoff Young discussed the highlights of the SABR* meeting he presented at over the weekend. In the post Geoff provided some links to other articles including the one about the Pacific Coast League Padres I wrote over at RJ’s Fro.
Beside the link GY commented on the accompanying picture (found by SDPads1) and the game attire for the 1930s baseball fan. The 1930s fan was stylish. There were …

2011 Padres: The Bench

2011 Padres: The Bench
NL West, San Diego Padres | 1 Feb 2011

Since there are so many changes to the Padres roster from last year to now it seems appropriate to address the issue of who will be on the bench for the team this year. Had it not been for the depth of the 2010 Padres bench they would not have gotten as far as they did during the season. Since the type of team that the front office has to …

Thank you Trevor!

Thank you Trevor!
NL West, San Diego Padres | 1 Feb 2011

Monday January 31, 2011
I had to wait to write this column about Trevor Hoffman’s retirement until I wasn’t so emotional. The problem is every time I saw the man play it was an emotional experience. Those emotions are indelibly etched in my memory and its near impossible to talk (or type) about Trevor Hoffman without replaying in my mind so many thrilling moments and a very few deflating moments I …

With all 8 position players named, it’s time to move on to my All-Time pitching staff. For this I will select 2 starting pitchers (1 righty and 1 lefty) and 2 relievers (also 1 righty and 1 lefty). Starters must have made a minimum of 100 starts or roughly 3 full seasons worth, to be eligible. Relievers need to have appeared in at least 150 games to qualify. Today it’s …

The Padres held their annual awards dinner on Wednesday night and I was invited, along with a handful of local bloggers (gaslampball, ducksnorts, and rjsfro) to attend the festivities.  For those of you that follow on Twitter you were able to follow along with me throughout the event.

Prior to the start of the event, guests had an opportunity to take pictures with Padres’ greats such as Dave Winfeld and …

Over at The Fro: The PCL Padres and a New Deal

Over at The Fro: The PCL Padres and a New Deal
NL West, San Diego Padres | 28 Jan 2011

I’ve written a column at RJ’s Fro in which the birth of the San Diego Padres is both examined and celebrated. You see, today marks the official announcement that San Diego would be receiving entrance into the Pacific Coast League. So it’s a birthday story of sorts. And who do we have to thank for suffering these pangs of child birth? The answer may surprise you.
To continue the celebration….. …

Some relief pitchers like to stroll out of the bullpen on their way to the mound.  In the old days, they were even driven out in a cart.  But when Padres Manager Buddy Black barks out, “Gimme Bell,” and that bullpen door opens, Heath Bell puts it into high gear and full-out runs to the mound.  And …

Padres Uniform Decisions In A Vacuum

Padres Uniform Decisions In A Vacuum
NL West, San Diego Padres | 27 Jan 2011

I’m not saying the Padres need to use a vacuum to clean up the mess that is their new road gray uniform; although there are others who would gladly volunteer for the job. The title of said job could be called, Sucker of Suck.
Hmmm…… maybe I would volunteer for this fantasy job. Whoa, this analogy is unraveling quickly. Let us move on…
The new away gray jersey is actually pretty awesome …
